These micro four thirds used cameras cost the same as a used full frame camera. I was thinking these would be smaller, lighter and importantly CHEAPER. I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. Bought the Tamron 24-70 f2.8. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me. Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.

It is better to use JPEG especially if you're unsure. Think about this: camera takes RAW data and before storing it as JPEG, does the same edits you usually do manually in editors. So why wasting your time? You think you are smarter than your camera? Yes, camera does even "shadows/highlights" (you control that with ADL/ALO/DRO modes, they have different naming depending on brand but do essentially same thing - highlight preservation, shadow pullling). Enable and forget about editing obsession. 99% percent of the RAW shooters do not even know about it. When you picture a landscape with bright skies, you do what? RAW, shadow/highlights... Or maybe gradient filter in editor. Try a REAL gradient lens filter instead. You will expose the ground properly (that's always better than pulling it from underexposed pixels even if it's RAW) and the sky won't be blown up. Sharpness, saturation, contrast, warmth, denoising - camera does too and lets you control that. You can see result on screen, you can zoom, so you can adjust if you don't like something, you can prepare different profiles, you can see the final result right away (the most empowering thing), it's not film days anymore and there's no need to bring back those limited time-delayed workflows into digital photography. Auto HDR (combination from multiple shots) feature built into many cameras is awesome too if you want to deal with complex lighting conditions. Available only for JPEG of course. By bracketing RAWs and later combining on PC (to save as JPEG eventually!) you are only losing your time. Many people compare RAWs to camera's Standard or Neutral JPEG picture profile. And they notice lack of sharpness or lost details in shadows or something else. But even some old DSLRs have at least the Contrast setting. Use lowest contrast plus slight underexposure and your JPEG will magically display more dynamic range. If you really need that dynamic range of course. Because it's not always bad to have contrast. But to have a flat image or image with typical "HDR look" is often annoying. You need some more edits? Any editor supports JPEG editing, not only specialized RAW development software. And yes, JPEGs withstand many kinds of editing maybe not so flexibly as RAWs but since you downscale before printing or sharing anyway that difference is not obvious at all. Again, if you need some severe edits, you're likely doing something wrong. Yes, JPEG cannot restore WB that is completely off. But to screw things up like that so that only RAW could save you while having a screen with preview and ability to spot the mistake on spot is not normal, it is not professionalism. You will get better in photography if you stick with JPEGs and learn how to use the light, the shooting parameters and the camera settings. If you ignore everything and just shoot RAW in hope to "fix everything in editor" later, then you are preventing yourself from progressing. Camera does only small part of the job. Most of the job is done by the light and the photographer. Price of camera, sensor size, megapixels, formats (RAW or not) - all secondary.

Hello from New York City! Came to the same conclusion on the MT44 is the same as you. Its a really unique product in the market. Using MT44 to hold the Lumix GX1 for unattended video shooting for stage performances while keeping Lumix GH2 handheld to take still photos. It works well. By the way, do you have any recommendations on ND, graduation ND and polarizing filter system for outdoor and travel shooting that is economical, decent quality, easy to use and can fit in a small travel bag? Thank you for your informative video.

Cool design! I have a smaller, shorter version, the MT-73 and found it still pretty useful to stabilize hand-held video. Open the legs press them against the chest, and flip the camera to point horizontally. It looks a bit weird, but it reduces shake if you just turn your body to pan. Also it’s good for low angle video shots; just record upside down and flip in post. It’s so small that it’s easy to carry in a small bag, like your MT-44.

Even the professional large M43 stuff is still smaller than full frame stuff most of the time, esp lenses. I recently got into the Nikon Z system with a second hand Z6... Even though that body is about the size of the E-M1/OM-1 series, it's still noticeable heftier. And the supposedly "compact" Z 24-70 f4 S kit lens is SO heavy, esp compared with like the OM 12-45mm f4.

Price - I need a camera with very high burst rates, a stacked sensor and top-notch stabilisation. That makes the OM-1 (mark i or ii) the most budget friendly option on the market. It also gives me a ton of features other manufacturers didn’t get around to copying yet. Additionally, none of my Olympus gear ever died on me, no matter the conditions.

Nice review, the 14-140 is hard to beat. It’s definitely been carefully considered in how it was engineered with a balance of performance and portability. Pana could have done a 12-200mm but they didn’t, probably because of what was all shown in this video. I really like Panasonics 12-35mm f2.8 lens though.

I particularly like Micro 4/3 for walkaround street shooting, for the size/weight & especially the greater depth of field it offers. I walk around with a wide angle set at f8 or f11, rarely giving focus much thought.

The 35-100 f4-5.6 (H-FS35100E) actually does have Dual IS - in fact it has full Dual IS2 functionality since the 1.3 version of the firmware back in July 2020. Dual IS was implemented in this lens as long ago as December 2015 I have this lens and the 35-100 2.8ii 'Pro' version and honestly, they are both fantastic lenses. I use the f4-5.6 along with the 12-32 on my GX and have the perfect travel setup. The 2 2.8 lenses I pair with the G9 (now G9ii) for the sturdier build, weathersealing and so on

FF is not everything. But MFT is not either. To say it is so compact and less costly is simply saying nothing, because there are many factors that affect everybody differently. For me for instance: I want serious gear to photograph birds in flight and wildlife as a hobby enthusiast. Low light performance, great AF , at a budget of $5000. I chose Canon. R7 with a speedbooster on a used EF 500 F4 is mk1 gives me a 550mm F2.8 equivalent with F4 DOF for $ 3000 all in. If I use it bare, I have 800mm F4 equivalent with F5.6 DOF. Add a used EF 1.4 TC iii and I have 1120mm equivalent F8! The TC and a used EF100-400 L ii set me back another $2000. With that setup I have equipment that outperforms my ability. And I can buy a FF body and use it on those lenses if I want in future, or I can invest in some awesome RF glass in future… That is me, others will see it differently. I don’t walk around with my camera and a 35mm lens in case. I just use my phone. But when I get a chance to go into the bush…

Hi Gary. I have been an Olympus fanboy and I have many of their cameras. But, I have seen so much about Panasonic cameras on your channel as well as others, that I decided to spent $200 and purchase an old Lumix G6. Well I fell in love with the operating system and the user friendliness of the camera, that it became my "go to" camera. So now I bought a Lumix G85 on MPB for only $327.00! I wanted a weather sealed camera with IBIS. I have not yet received my new camera, but I am very excited to be getting it. Thanks for bringing me the wonderful world of Lumix cameras. The only thing I have against them is how big they are. Even your GX85 is big when compared against many Olympus cameras.... I will keep you updated as to my experiences with my G85.

    There's always a reason to use MFT. Whether it's a GM1 or GH7. ;)

Would you make a video about taking photos at concerts with the gx80? (low light, in the club or other inside venue)

A new GX with all the features mentioned would be an instant buy for me. I was pretty set on getting a G9, and then by coincidence I went on a trip with a group of friends and one of them had one. After trying it, it reminded me of why I got into Micro Four Thirds in the first place. The G9 is a great camera, but it felt too big. Sticking with my GX8 for now, which felt really compact in comparison, and even the GX8 is large when compared to my old GX1.

Hi Gary! I have watched several of your reviews and am seeking advice. My goal is to have 2 lenses that will be suited for family gatherings and traveling with a goal of shooting landscapes, flowers, animals, northern lights/night sky, and distance things (we are going on an Alaskan cruise and I would like to have the ability to shoot land from the boat as well as things in the water). I am also hoping to film exercise videos for my youtube channel (camera on tripod and me in a chair) and would love it one of the two lenses I purchase work for that as well. I could also see myself printing a few shots, no larger than like 14x20. From my research, the G95 fits all my needs. I am leaning toward the 14-140 and 75-300. Would I ever miss the 12-60 for my purposes?

Panasonic 20 mm and the Olympus 12-40 f2.8. But as it would be an em1 mkii body, it’ll be the 12-40 f2.8 every day
